As many of you may know, in early August of 2023, a series of wildfires broke out on the island of Maui, causing devastating damage to the land and community. The wind-driven fires prompted evacuations and left many without homes, killing at least 111 people and leaving 388 others missing in the town of Lahaina.
We believe that as a small business, we serve an important role in our local community as well as our global one. Brewing beers with a purpose is one of the ways we show up for community, near and far.
When we heard about the fires we immediately knew we wanted to help the community of Maui. Cielomar grew up on the island of Puerto Rico, and has family on the island. We know how devastating and debilitating these natural disasters can be on islands when you depend so much on outside help and resources. That’s how our IPA brew Strong Roots was born.
This West Coast IPA is loaded with some of our favorite hops: Mosaic, Citra and Idaho 7. There’s a medium bitterness to it and carries flavors and aromas of mango, pink grapefruit, stone fruit, bubblegum, tropical, citrus, grassy and pine.
About Hawaii Community Foundation & Maui Strong Fund
The Hawaii Community Foundation (HCF) is an organization based in Hawaii with over 105+ years of community impact.
100% of the proceeds of Strong Roots will go to the Maui Strong Fund, a fund by HCF. The Maui Strong fund was created just days after one of the worst natural disasters in Hawaii’s history to provide financial resources to support the ongoing recovery needs of the land and people of Maui.
We were granted permission through a formal application process to raise funds on their behalf. The funds will be distributed to a variety of community and county leaders on the ground. Specific partnerships include Hawaiʻi Animal Kuleana Alliance, Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Hawaiʻi, and Imua Family Services to name a few.
About the Label & Beer
On the Strong Roots label is an illustration of Lahaina’s beloved 150-year old banyard tree. Despite the strong wildfire damage, the tree survived and continues to stand strong. We designed the label with the banyan tree in mind as a symbol and admiration of Maui’s hope and strength.
